It's a styrofoam head. As long as your expectations are reasonable, I think you'll be pleased. While it is styrofoam and therefore not something that's going to hold up to a lot of abuse, it's of good quality with a relatively dense, smooth surface. It also has a lot of detail and looks great if you're planning to use it for display or as an artistic or photographic reference.

My only complaint is that it's somewhat small. I wear L/XL hats, and this is definitely a S/M head, since when I drop one of my hats on it, it looks like a kid trying on daddy's clothes. I bought this as a base for working on a Halloween mask, and while it will certainly do the job, I'm going to have to fudge quite a bit to make sure the mask will fit my actual head.

Finally, a mannequin head for longer wigs!! Attractive, classy golden color too and affordable!! I own several wigs that are the same length as my natural hair or longer which means below the shoulderblades (halfway down your back). The classical styrofoam head which is commonly available is too short for longer wigs. The "portable" type are handy for traveling but not tall enough and unattractive if you want to "park" your wigs "permanently on your dresser, shelves or display case. This is your best choice if you own longer wigs and want to keep those wavy lengths or sleek straight hair in top condition and untangled.

OK, what is up with this head? I ordered this thing to enable me to finish my monster sculpture and man, I gotta say that if this is supposed to be a full-sized man's head then I'm either a giant or I'm deformed. Or possibly both.

First off, the head came in a box with zero packing. It was dirty and the nose was mashed a bit. So, no big deal, right? Because I'm going to end up covering it in fur and fake eyes anyway. But, what if I had wanted a nice, perfect clean head? Well, I would have been hopping mad, I tell you. In fact, I was kind of mad, so I slapped the styro head around a bit and then I let a friend start slapping it around as well. I'm thinking of ordering another one just so I can come home from work and then slap the ever-living daylights out of this thing when I'm mad at the boss.

OK, so then I start looking at it and I realize, this thing is really, really small. I held it up to a friend's head and his head looked HUGE next to it. Then I went to a mirror and looked, and yes, again, way too small styro head. If these other reviewers here are using this to model hats and the like, they are making some tiny little hats that would never fit this huge melon on top of my neck. So, all in all, not a bad head for fake monster-making, but a bit small for anything dealing with reality.

I got this in less days then expected, in perfect shape, not damaged in any way. It's working out great for my photography course practices for portaiture. I suppose if you needed it for other purposes it would be great, I like it because it isn't just a plain "white" blank style, but it has "makeup" on and is perfect for my purposes. I put a wig on it so it's a bit more realistic.

After drastic thinning of my hair due to immune-suppression drugs, I bought a wig. It didn't seem right to keep hanging it on the arm of a kitchen chair .. so my search for a mannequin head began. I Got this head for my birthday and I LOVE it!!! So it said it had only 50% human hair so I wasn't sure if it could heat style or not.it does! It curls and waves, straightens beautifully! I can see why there aren't many reviews on this doll head, but it does what it's supposed to do. The manikin (sorry if misspelled) is very pretty, looks just like the picture. The hair is fine, but strong. I have really learned how to perfect my braiding on this doll head, but beware as with any doll head the hair will begin to fall out with over-manipulation, so I bring her out every once in a while. Great for the Price!!

I ordered this for a photography target. The hair feels/looks good. I cant say I have any experience working with long straight hair, (being a guy with 1" curly hair). It seems to brush easily enough. The Manikin head's "hole" seems to be undersized to fit on the little head stand I ordered at the same time. I dont know if this is common or not.

As a photography target, there are only a couple of complaints. The eyes look a little, well, eerie. I think I will have my sister in law, who is a cosmotologist, put some better eyebrows, and maybe fake lashes. It is also kind of a weird color, a little too yellow. Perhaps some makeup is required. It is so much easier to have a fixed subject that doesnt complain "Dad, Im tired of pictures". It is wonderful to check/practice lighting setups, where repetitive shots are required. The head seems a litle small to be representative of a real head. Check the customer image of it and my 6 year old daughter...

I dont know about the 16-17inch part of it, but the longest hairs I can measure are about 12".
